Why Your Accountant Cannot Download Bank Statements for You

This is a common misunderstanding, so let’s clear it up properly.

As your accountant, I cannot extract bank statements on your behalf unless I have been explicitly granted read-only access to your bank account by you.
Even then, access depends on the bank and the permissions provided.
More importantly, accountants must remain autonomous and operate within the limits of their professional indemnity insurance.
Logging into a client’s bank, using their credentials, or “just grabbing statements” breaches both security and insurance conditions.
    What this means in practice:
    • You are responsible for downloading your own bank statements
    • You must supply them in full and in a readable format
    • Sharing login details is not permitted
    • This protects you, me, and your data.
